Jane Austen is my favorite. I didn’t know much about her until I saw the movie version of “Sense and Sensibility” directed by Ang Lee back in the ’90s. That started an obsession. Since then I have read all of Jane’s novels–some of them several times–and watched all of the screen adaptations of each that I could find. I especially love the fact that Jane’s stories are timeless. They are still as enjoyable to readers today as they were when she wrote them.

I have always loved Jane Austen. My Aunt gave my mom the movie adaptation to Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet when I was in high school. I bought Pride and Prejudice on a trip to Florida. When that copy fell apart I bought the movie adaptation with Colin Firth. Jane Austen has been my favorite author due to her insightful way in which she writes about people and the world around her.

I really do adore Jane Austin’s stories but I have to say Beatrix Potter. Her stories are great for all ages and her artwork is so whimsical bringing the stories to life. I decorated my daughter’s nursery with Beatrix Potter story characters and the baby shower was the same theme. I am now homeschooling my daughter, who is 10, and we’ve re-read her books and also studied her as an artist and author. Beatrix Potter was a truly remarkable and talented woman.

Picking a favorite from those 3 is hard!!! I have special reasons for loving each one. If I have to choose a favorite, it would probably be Jane Austen. I’ve read her books and watched movies based on the books multiple times, and I never get tired of them. Because of her books, I love the Regency era and have read Georgette Heyer and multiple Christian novelists who write Regency era books. I think it’s the romance, the happy endings, the style and customs of the day, and the fact that she wrote what she knew. But I could give you just as many reasons why I love Dickens (though primarily The Christmas Carol and the Victorian age) and Potter!

After reading Linda Lear’s biography of Beatrix Potter, I was obsessed! Beatrix Potter created a new form of animal fable, a magical world where anthropomorphized animals behave as real with true animal instincts and are accurately illustrated by a scientific artist. Beatrix “wove the tapestry of her memories, her travels over the landscape and north-country lore into a fanciful, entertaining tale.”

I couldn’t wait to introduce my fourth graders to this classic author! So for Christmas, I created a literary advent/adventure! I gift wrapped the Beatrix Potter collection and each day a student got to pick a gift to unwrap from our Santa bag. We then projected a crackling fire as ambiance on our screen and read the book aloud to the class! While the gift unwrapping was fun, the unboxing of our imaginations was the true joy! Merry Christmas and may your New Year “Bea” joyful one!

Since I was a little girl, and discovered the Orphan Train Quartet in a library, I have enjoyed learning about both orphan trains and mail-order brides. The historical facts behind the British Home Children being exported to Canada was new for me. I found myself aching and crying at times at the injustices the innocent children had to endure. Not to mention living relatives…
The sweet romances definitely helped soothe the angst I felt towards some of the characters and their actions. Of course, Turansky did a beautiful job of writing the HEA! Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this book giveaway!

I loved reading Jane Austen in Highschool. We read Pride and Prejudice in my Lit class. In college I read Sense and Sensibility and then decided to read Emma. I wanted to learn more about her and read a biography that told about her early life. I think she was brave to turn down an offer of marriage at a time when that was highly expected of young women. Focusing on her writings made her more aware of other things than just an English home. She was remarkable and very talented. I have also read Dickens and Beatrix Potter to my children and grandchildren. But Austen is someone I just wanted to keep for me.

I got to read books by Beatrix Potter and Charles Dickens during my school days. However, I did not really discover Jane Austen until the famous 5-part TV series of “Pride and Prejudice” came out in the nineties. Both that version, as well as the original book, really brought out her unique voice as an author of the Regency period, as well as her skillful command of the English language. So, she has meanwhile become my favorite of the three authors.

Of those three authors, Beatrix Potter is my favorite. I read those little books to my daughter, beginning when she was still nursing. She loved them too. I don’t remember now how many months old she was when she laughed at something funny in The Tale of Mrs. Tiggle-Winkle. She was young enough that I wasn’t sure she really made the connection, but when I repeated whatever it was, she stopped nursing and laughed again. She continues to be a book lover.

Charles Dickens. He was the first of the three I discovered and that happened when I was in 9th grade. I was used to books where I could guess the ending way to soon, but he kept me wondering and reading with anticipation to the very end. He was also such a descriptive author of the settings, environment, mood, and people in his books.

Beatrix Potter is my favorite because I loved the stories as a child and I have a daughter that does as well and the drawings are so charming.

I did my senior thesis on the works of Bronte and Austen. I have read pride and prejudice dozens of times and have listened on audio over and over.
