The View From the Couch

IMG_1047Hi Friends, I am spending a lot of time on the couch since I broke my ankle last Sunday. Here’s how it happened. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and I decided to spend some time working in my front flower gardens. I had purchased three flats of annuals to brighten up the yard, and I was anxious to transplant them. But first I had to clean out the old oak leaves and pull the wilted tulip and daffodil leaves. I find a lot of joy being outdoors, digging in the dirt, and coaxing blooms from my flowerbeds.

Our front garden is terraced, and I stepped up to pull some weeds, and when I stepped down I missed the lower row of bricks landed on the driveway with a crashing thud. I heard my ankle break, and I knew I was in trouble. Fortunately, I had my phone with me, and I was able to call my friend and neighbor who is a nurse. She came over and helped me, then I called Scott, and he came home and took me to the ER.

After the doctor looked at the xrays he announced I had broken my ankle and my foot in two places. I would need to wear a removable boot-cast that looks like a very tall ski boot for at least six weeks. I also have some other scrapes and bruises, and I hurt a tendon in my right elbow which needs time and rest to heal. But that weakness in my arm makes using crutches impossible. So I have been hopping with a walker, which is exhausting, and using a rolling chair to get around. Tomorrow I am borrowing a knee scooter from a friend, and I hope that will give me more mobility.IMG_1163

So what do I see as I sit on my couch?

  • I see that I have a wonderful husband who is very caring and patient.
  • I see I have a great church full of friends who have offered meals and practical support.
  • I see I have very kind daughters who are willing to give up their free time to stay with me so I won’t be alone.
  • And I have many friends who are willing to pray for my comfort and healing.
  • I see my family and friends love me, and they are willing to go the extra mile to help me and be sureI have everything I need.

That is a pretty good view. I am blessed and thankful!  What do you see as you look out on life today?

I’m so sorry, Carrie. That sounds like something I would do! I sprained my ankle 4 weeks ago and then a week later broke a toe. I’m glad you have wonderful family and friends to look after you. Saying a prayer for you.

Hi Debbie Lynne, I am sorry to hear you have been going through a similar time of trouble . . . so we can really realte to each other. I am thankful for God’s grace that helps me through and gives me strength. How are you doing now? Are you walking normally. Four weeks isn’t very long for healing. Thanks for your care on prayers.

Hi Angel, Thanks for your kind words! I really do enjoy working in my yard. That photo was taken in April, and by June all those tulip blooms are gone and the old dried leaves and stalks can be pulled out. That’s what got me in trouble this time. Yes, I am blessed to have friends and family to love and help me. Take care!
